One of my good friends just received a lot of yarn from someone whom she knows. And I did mention that she was a good friend–she decided to share the wealth and I ended up acquiring Starbella.
Let me start off by saying this is a novelty yarn. I would not have thought to pick something up like this at all. But that is what I like about gifted yarn–it takes you out of your comfort zone.
So, let’s talk about the yarn. It’s listed as a bulky 6 (sadly it was discontinued years ago), and the color that I received it in is called Hope. The company that makes the yarn is Premier.
What’s interesting about this yarn, is that at the first glance, it looks like a tape (ribbon) yarn. I was interested, because I’ve never worked with it, but as I started to pull the fibers in the opposite direction it was a chain yarn as well. Needless to say this project was quick and pretty simple to work.
I used 5mm knitting needles ( US size 8), and casted on 8 stitches. From there, I knit the garter stitch until I ran out of yarn. Bound off, tied and that’s it! For a busy Mama like me, it honestly took me 2 days (or 4 nap times to be honest). And I’m extremely slow during nap time (don’t want to wake up the baby!).
Also, with this yarn, I had to use straight needles. My needles of choice was bamboo, since its a bit grippy, but that helped out a lot. I tried using circular needles for this, but once I put it down, and things go tangled, I just pulled the whole thing out to start again.
Even though this yarn is no longer in circulation, and I believe has been discontinued, it was fun to work with. It was truly a novelty yarn, and it wasn’t something that I would pick up on my own, but I’m glad that I had a chance to try it out.
Have you acquired any novelty yarn?
