Scrolling online for a project to complete on the go I had very specific requirements. It had to be quick, and it had to be engaging, and it had to be fun. The other requirement is that it had to use yarn that I was looking to repurpose.
Let me back up, in my earlier days of knitting, I was so enthused to just knit and I didn’t really think about the pattern that I was doing. I wasn’t working from patterns, just from my head. I had the building blocks to make patterns but not the know how to make it look put together.
Also in my earlier knitting days, I wasn’t concerned about what kind of yarn that I wanted, it just had to be yarn and on sale. I guess you could say that I was building my yarn stash. Well, it’s built. Very built. So much that I had to destash my yarns to be happy about it.
Now I’m very past building my yarn stash and I’m in the process of looking at the things that I made and seeing if I love it, or need to remake it. While doing so I came across a shawl that I made a long time ago.
The shawl in the past had a purpose. It was to keep my shoulders warm while it was still early in the morning. I need it to tie around my back to keep it from falling. Also it had to open in order for me to nurse my children. Since I had those requirements I was fiddling around with a top down triangle shawl.
I thing those shawls are absolutely beautiful. It’s so much unbroken real-estate on the back to show off the pattern. It’s still one of my favorite shawl patterns. The thing with this shawl is that I was made with 4 weight yarn. So if I was to wear it out, it was a very bulky yarn to wear under my coat. I like to wear it with the triangle in the front.
At the time, the shawl served my purpose and I adored it. Now that I’m not nursing my kids anymore, I still would like to use the yarn but for a new purpose. The yarn that I used had an attached memory to it, it was when my sons were younger, and little babies. This brings me to liking the yarn but needing another way to either wear my shawl or accept that I need to try a different shape. After too much research, I decided to go for a different shape and I can’t tell you how pleased I am with it.
I decided to do two things at once, try a new shape and repurpose yarn. The shape that I’ve decided to go with was a boomerang shawl. I’ve made triangle shawls (and stoles) before, but I was feeling a fit adventurous and decided to knit one of these up. I’ve seen it online so many times, it looked interesting, but I didn’t know how it was going to work with what I wanted. However, I decided, what could go wrong? If I don’t like the project I can always frog it. So I moved on ahead.
For this shawl I went with the free pattern of Can I Borrow That Please? It was an interesting knit pattern and the repeats of the segments were simple but yet beautiful. I think it worked well for this striped yarn, because you can see the relief of the texture quite well with it. My favorite part of this pattern is the slipped stitches. Looking at it in relation to the rest of the pattern, and it has the right amount of texture that I was looking for.
I was excited while knitting it and I was excited after I finished it. I think the style has an extraordinary pop I need for my accessories. I really like this pattern and I will knit it in different stripped yarn just to see how it looks.
The first time I wore this shawl, I admit that I was in love with it. I never wore an asymmetrical shawl before. Honestly, the depth of it was like shawlette, it wasn’t deep at all. However, I love the look of it, and how it adds the right amount of color to my outfits.
Going forward, I think it’s time for me to be adventurous and really step out of my comfort zone. I have tons of yarn, and I’m just looking forward to just knitting for myself and my kids.
